I Timothy 5

Well, it's been a while since I've entered any comments here. I'm not sure if anyone is reading these comments on our Bible 365 readings but as is usually the case with exercises like this, I'm sure I benefit the most anyway so I'm back. If you are part of the Christ Church family you probably had access to my travel log from Kenya. I'm afraid I fell behind in my reading while traveling but I've followed my own advice and jumped back in where I'm supposed to be. I was struck in today's readings by the first two verses of I Timothy 5: Do not speak harshly to an older man, but speak to him as to a father, to younger men as brothers, to older women as mothers, to younger women as sisters -- with absolute purity. Think about how much better our world would be if we honored this principle. Think about how much more pleasant day to day life would be for people in work settings and schools, in stores and government offices. Think about how conversations between the sexes would change, how email, facebook and twitter would be altered. Think about how much less profanity would be used, ugly jokes told. Think about how much more encouraging and kind our conversations would be. Basically Paul just tells Timothy to talk to everyone as though they were family. After all, we are. We are all part of the family of God.
