SC Mission Team Journal

The 2010 South Carolina Youth Mission Trip was June 19-26.  A group of 120 youth, college students and adults travelled to Hollywood, SC to build and improve homes for needy families. Team members were encouraged to make at least two postings during the trip telling about their experiences, reactions, feelings, etc. Below, you will find the entries from this year's trip.

Sunday, June 20

Today is Sunday. It is Father’s Day.  We went to church at Wesley Memorial UMC and went to the movies.  Jonah Hex is a terrible movie.  I guess it’s because I’m a girl and it’s a masculine movie.  And we are now chillin’.  Well, tomorrow should be fun.  Painting and caulking.
--Erika Cecil

Dear Journal,
Mission trip has been fun so far, as always.  I’ve made a few new friends but I still struggle with names a bit.  Taylor Gerkin is really enjoying spades. We’re undefeated.  I played basketball last night.  Goose was on my team and it was fun.  I hope everyone remembers that today is Father’s Day.  And I also hope there’s still some ice cream left when I’m done writing this.  Pretty much everyone was up by 8:30 this morning for a church service that was at 11:00.  I really enjoyed the service sitting between Bonnie and Coach Duda.  I will miss that preacher next year as he is going to a new church.  Today he talked about faith and how it should never stop growing.  There was also a baptism that Susan helped out with which was pretty neat.  I was signed up to go to the beach this evening but I’m rather tired and I have always wanted to go see the Angel Oak so I’ll be headed to the oak tree later.  I think I’ll be going with some people I don’t know too well which will be fun. I think one of the most important parts of the mission trip is, like Susan says, “Be a friend.  Make a friend.”  I’m looking forward to dinner tonight and to see the oak tree. I think I’m on Britt’s site like I was two years ago and I always enjoy working on his site.  If you read this, try and introduce yourself to someone new.  It’s good and fun. Much love and Happy Father’s Day.
--Alec Rotunda

Today in church Alec Rotunda demonstrated true Christian love.  As the ushers began taking up offering he reached in one pocket and pulled out a $5 bill.  Then he reached in his other pocket and pulled out 5 quarters.  Then he passed out the quarters to all those around him from CUMC who didn’t have offering.  When the ushers came by, all contributed the money they brought or had been given!!  God is truly good—all the time!!
--Bonnie

Today we went to check out our work site.  It is an elderly woman named Sarah.  She seemed so glad to see us and her face was just glowing! I don’t know if she is a Christian or not, but I am glad that we are doing God’s work and helping her!
--Christine South

We love SC! Happy Father’s Day!  After an inspiring sermon at church, we ate a delicious lunch and spent the rest of the afternoon at the beach, movies, oak tree or Wal-Mart!
--Anonymous

Today has been fabulous.  It was prime time being able to sleep in, and then we went to service.  The service was really neat because not only did we overpopulate the place, there was a baptism that Susan NV got to assist and as part of the congregation, we got to witness it as the body of Christ.  Then I chose to go to the beach where we played chicken in the water and soaked up the sun.  Finally, after dinner we all loaded up in the vans to go see our work sites and prepare for the week ahead of us.  The site groups and devotion groups are super awesome. And as a bonus, the food is a-plus material.
--Mary Catherine Shaver

We slept well and got to even sleep late.  After a late breakfast, we went to church and Susan got to help with a baptism.  Church was very crowded.  Ate lunch and now I get to go to the beach with about 60 close friends.  Then when we come back, we’ll start getting ready for tomorrow.  I’m on a roofing team with Tim as a leader.  We have a strong team and we’re in some shade.  Will write more later about how the work goes.  Also, I need to tell more about church!!
--Bonnie, “God is good! All the time!”

Today was fine. I went to the beach and got to sleep in more that I could at home.  Since this is my first SC Mission Trip, I don’t know what to expect on Monday. So, I hope for the best and I hope I have a really great time here and at my work site.
--Andrew Long

After dinner tonight, everyone went to look at their work sites.  We learned that:

  1. Our site was directly behind and different site, and
  2. We have ANIMALS!

Our site has an adult cat, 3 cute tiny baby kittens, a bunny rabbit and a dog.  We were told that the dog was friendly but when we went up to it, it growled!  We thought that maybe we should wait until we were introduced to the dog before we petted it.  Bye!
--Kara Gustaveson

Second day here. Big thanks to Matt Gravely and my parents for sending/bringing my i-touch and a book!  We went to the beach.  Part of it had shell pieces instead of sand and then a big drop/cliff down to the water.  Then there was a pipe, and beyond that, the beach was a smooth slope.  I played chicken; me and Jacob Smith vs. Morgan and Phil.  I won! (partially because another kid pushed her)!  I was on top of a 3-person piggyback (Alex from rock wall was under me!).  I’m having so much fun!  (Alex shaved his head into a Mohawk, and Eva has too!)  Me and Claire took an outdoor shower with a HUGE horsefly.  I did kitchen clean-up duty, saw a croc (it was under a van!) and can’t wait for tomorrow! Livy a!  (Claire said to put “yea” so...“yea!”
--Sarah Harris

The beach was fun, but my eyes were stinging.  I jumped over most of the waves, but some went over me.  It was so high-larious watching Sarah push Morgan and John off in Chicken.  I kept bugging Sarah to do it and she finally did.  We’ve been singing “I Am Not a Robot” and “Shark in the Water” ever since my i-pod turned on.  So...as Sarah said...yeah!
--Claire Simons

We just got back from church...and my honest opinion is I didn’t like it .  I thought the preacher played around too much and it makes me love the preachers at Christ Church even more!  Peace.
--Anonymous

Happy Sunday! It’s been a great day.  We slept in—hooray!—which was good since Tim work up many of us “re-blowing up” his air mattress several times last night.  Still, I had a fan blowing on me from head and toes so it was a very good night. Kitchen crew is doing great under the direction of Jane Harkey.  The food has been nutritious and tasty, and so many folks have been helping out—thanks!  The afternoon was filled with option—movie, Angel Oak, beach, Wal-Mart.  Each and every one was fun.  I went to the Angel Oak, which was awesome.  So beautiful and so old.  I was glad I went. Great day!
--SNV

Hey!  This trip is so awesome!  All we do is play at the church.
--Random Freshman

Monday, June 21

First day of work and it was hard.  I never sweat that much in my life.  The ladies are amazing.  They brought us water for everyone and soda for lunch.  Really have to go.
--Kieran

My site is spectacular.  We put up a a new ceiling (the third one the Richards family has had).  We are right beside a site that has Luke Patton and Laura Grady on it.  How wonderful. Jealous!  I knew, in conclusion, I love the South Carolina Mission Trip.
--Shelby Armentrout

Today was a good first day of work.  We got a lot done, including new ceiling in the short kitchen, new porch/stairs built, weed eating and trash picking up.  All we have left is to put in the new floor tomorrow, which should easily be done.  Can’t wait for the rest of the week.
--Lauren G

  • Heat – man it’s hot down here!
  • Food – Jane Harkey has done a great job of keeping everyone fed.
  • Shower – One of the most underrated feelings in the world after a hard day’s work.
  • Sleep – a hard thing to get on an air-filled balloon in a room with 100 other people.
  • Alligator – could ‘a been a crocodile but it had sharp teeth and a long tail, and it was in the church parking lot!
  • Dogs – they’re everywhere; around the church and around our work site (One puppy bit me, and one dog was dead on the site this morning.)
  • Wood rot – the leading tourist attraction in Coastal South Carolina (if you count mission teams as tourists)
  • Piggly Wiggly – the real top attraction in Hollywood, SC
  • Wrecks – saw a motorcycle accident on Saturday, saw a Corvette accident on Sunday
  • Miracles – everywhere, every day on this mission trip!

Dear Journal,
Tonight was my last night and I’ve had a blast!  I am so satisfied with my gift!  It was tough finding a good idea today, especially with the site we have. It’s not an easy task.  Our group did so well today and Taylor Gerkin is having fun, which is great!  I miss my good friend, Rachel Gentry, this year though.  She’d been on my work site all the other years!  The lady’s house we’re working on’s name is Lillie.  Her sister in law was around but Lillie’s brother passed away last year, which was sad.  My mom got here not too long ago and brought cookies but she didn’t bring enough for everyone but it’s alright.  I’m headed back tomorrow for soccer but I’ll miss being here the rest of the week.  Keep faith and have fun!
--Alec

My first mission trip, and many people have asked if it is what I expected.  Well, in so many ways it is soooo much more.  I expected the heat.  I knew sleeping would be hard on me and anyone around me. I knew the pain, that would be my daily friend, was not going to stop me from doing what I needed to do  I knew the work could be dirty and nasty. I knew I would be hot, tied, and sore with some of the most fun and good people I know.  Yes, when we pulled back the flooring in the kitchen on my project and a hundred bugs of all types went running up the wall, that was more! I watched the young people that had taken leadership roles show such passion and confidence in their duties, and that was more!  To truly see God working though and in the lives of this group, well, I think I expected that, but being here fills y heart MORE!  P.S. Playing Spoons with Bonnie and Donna—THAT’S MORE!
--Butch Doutt

“All’s fair in love and spoons.”
—Donna Fleming

I’m on Greg’s site. There are two dogs.  One is a pit bull and the other is a black lab. There was a third dog but we found it in the back yard, dead.  This worksite is mainly painting .  I have primer all over my legs and hands.  The trim for the house is a pretty perhaps turquoi8se color. The main color of the house is going to be a shade of yellow but I don’t know yet since we haven’t opened the paint bucket yet.  The house was an ugly shade of beige and forest green.  We broke a flower holder but it was cracked to begin with.
--Eryn

1st day wicked hot but I have an ”A” team of workers.  We pulled off 2 layers of shingles on the front and back of the house and went back in with tarpaper.  Shingling will start in full force tomorrow.  We also got lucky and the showers skipped us. Knocking off at 3 tomorrow for Seafood Jamboree but with a decent day we should be in great shape to finish Friday, but the weather will have a say about that.  What a great bunch of kids!!!
--Britt

I was awakened in the middle of the night with pterodactyl noises which were lovely.  Other than that, working on the site this morning was delightful, bright and early.  We are working for a woman named Sarah.  She is so sweet and has four cats.  We got our shirts today which was wild crazy props to the design crew AKA Anthony Roto.  It’s amazin’!  Later after a nice shower a took a little nap and had a heart-to-heart with my BFF Cole. Then we played some exhilarating Catchphrase.  It got kinda loud. Tomorrow I look forward to caulking and priming!  Alright, well, I’ll write later.
--Sophie

Did you know it takes 12 brownie pouches, 36 eggs, 6 cups of oil, 4 cups of water and a LOT of stirring to make brownies for this crew?  Being on kitchen crew is requiring lots of different skills.  In addition to math and conversion equations, you have to be able to make a pbj sandwich “just so.”  You have to be able to read a map and decipher directions. You have to remember who likes crunchy vs. creamy peanut butter.  You have to have thick skin when folks make cracks about your cushy job—AND MORE!  BUT, what a good time, we have had today.  Thanks, God!
--SNV

The Faith is a Journey statement is so true.  It is amazing to see the transformations in the youth, adults, time, work sites.  Today was a first day mission trip for several people and it was awesome to know that those who were seasoned would lead, nurture, and encourage others on learning new skills, helping and doing for others and building relationships. All part of the journey—and it’s a blessed one.
--Mamma K

Aww, man.  We had to work today.
--Random freshman

Today was the first day on the work site.  My team is putting siding on a house.  We got a lot done today and worked very efficiently.  Sometimes what happens at “home” aka the gym, is much more interesting.  One of the “at home” sports that are required is Spoons.  Spoons is a game in which when one person acquires four of the same card, everyone dives into the middle of the table, in hopes of not being the one person without a spoon.  This is not usually harmful and usually entertaining, but. . . when Susan and Donna and Bonnie are added to the game, this game gains a whole new intensity.  Bruises are created, people fling themselves onto others, defending themselves at the other end of the table.  In a personal recollection of this game, I have had people fling themselves onto me, and myself onto others.  I have watched friends wrestle each other and go as far as biting each other.  Everyone comes out laughing and limping.  It is fun and often the highlight of my day.
--Zoe S.

Well, today was a blast from the past.  I helped Mrs. Harkey, SNV, and Austin Jeffries in the kitchen.  We learned many things, such as the number of ham slices to put on a sandwich, the correct way to make pb&j sandwiches (pb on both sides of the bread so the jelly won’t run through), Austin doesn’t like pimento cheese, and Mrs. Harkey would eat mayo out of a jar with a spoon. Yuk!  Kitchen crew is such a party, although I will be happy to join my site tomorrow.  I’m so happy to be here.
--Catie

So, we had an interesting site.  One of the first things we saw was a dead dog.  It was sooo sad.  Eventually this man came to “take it away.”  There are two other dogs that wander around the site.  They are so sweet.  One is a pit bull but he is the sweetest dog ever.  I found 5 ticks on him though which was really sad.  I got them off. The lady is very nice.  We primed some parts of the house and painted the shutters teal.  It looks really good so far.  I can’t wait to start painting the rest of the house because it really needs it. The people on my site are great. Andrew Duda wants to be just like his brother.
--Allie

Today was the first day on site.  We had Mrs. Wilson. She is amazing!  She has raised 12 children--8 girls and 4 boys, most who live near her.  She spoke so lovingly of her own parents.  Her “daddy was a good man who farmed this land and her mother was the disciplinarian.”  Mrs. Wilson turned 90 on March 31st.  She said she would be excited to see us in heaven.  Very sweet.  Looking forward to another productive day tomorrow.
--Wendy

Today was wonderful!! We repaired holes in the floor so the owners won’t fall through and made new steps so they could climb to their porch.  My kids are the greatest!!  The older ones are teaching the younger ones and the younger ones will lead us one day.  Thank you God for letting me share in this amazing experience.
--Donna

I love the South Carolina Mission Trip!  I’ve gone every year since I was a rising 9th grader and it just keeps getting more fun every time.  The people are awesome and are really accepting even when you’re kind of weird.  Like today on my site I was doing this ridiculous should dance cuz. . . ya know Backstreet Boys came on. . . (gosh I hope no one read this. . . but really. . . ) anyways I was really worried I’d have no friends for the rest of the day, but I did have friends!  At least it seemed like it. . . I mean. . . I’m not gonna over-think this.  But anyways I guess I just wanted to say that I am blessed to be with these amazing unique people and spend a whole week doing God’s work!  Yay!
--Kristen

So far, very good. The best is yet to come.  I cannot wait until Charleston and do not ever want to leave.  Best trip ever.
--Cole Leonard

It’s another mission trip so again I’m having a great time and playing game after game of spades. We have a good time and I’ve gotten pretty good.  I have a roofing site this year and I’m excited.  I’ve painted a couple years so this is a nice change.
--Andrew Pratt

Journal,
Today was a very slow day of work.  Our job was to replace a floor and it is taking a lot longer than expected.  They told us that we are supposed to do this for three different rooms but that’s not going to happen.  Even though it is going slow taking out the old floor, it is fun, and I’m having a great time.
--Austin Cain

Tuesday, June 22

More sandwiches, more heat, more work, more fun.  It’s all good, guys, and we should enjoy every moment we can.
--SNV

Good morning! What a machine you guys have going down here!  I was always curious about what made trip “the experience of a lifetime.”  Getting a cup of coffee was an experience—What I couldn’t believe is how quiet a room full of 100+ folks can be and how loudly Susan and Bonnie can sing!  Can’t wait to visit the worksites this morning.  What a great mission you’re on!!
--Teri Rotunda

Short break before seafood and ice cream stop tonight.  Frustrating day on the work site although it ended well.  We are putting new floors in several rooms and building a landing and steps outside.  A couple of problems came up with both today, but our crew worked through them.  I am amazed at how these guys persevere in the heat and dirt and bugs even when difficulties arise. 90 year old home owner (Mrs. Wilson) and her son are very appreciative of our efforts.  Great crew—Tom Shank is awesome, and he is ably supported by Aaron Adkins, Alex Vinson.  Wendy O’Kelley (a rookie!) has been a lot of fun to have around.  I think she was a contractor in a previous life. Henry P, Clay M., Gray O., Kristen K, Jordan V., Mason R., and Austin C. are a great group of kids.  Thank God for this opportunity to serve.
--Debbie

Well, we went to the Seafood Jamboree today.  The food was as delicious as ever, but it appears they are cutting back on the crabs.  I guess no consumption of crab viscera by freshmen any more. . . We missed Ms. Linda (“Big Mama”) Gadsen, but Anderson Mack did a pretty good job filling in for her.  I hope she’s still alive and well. In other news, it’s so hot on the roof that the soles of my shoes detached.  I originally duct-taped them, but then had to completely tear them off because it was so annoying.  Fortunately, I found a pair of size 13 Reeboks in the yard sale bag at the outdoor showers.  We’ll see if I can’t melt them tomorrow.  With most loving sincerely,
--Ben Stevenson

Today, I saw God in a young girl about the age of 6.  She was at McDonalds when we were and I dropped some money without realizing it. As I was halfway through the parking lot, she came running barefoot towards me and handed me just a dime that I had dropped.  That is all.
--Sophie Gray

Last night we went back after dinner until 9 o’clock.  Thank you, Tim.  Good thing is that showers were open, and a lot of work got done.
--Adam

“Ice Ice Baby”. . . Susan sang this in the truck last night on the ice run.  What a wonderful experience this has been for a first timer!  I am in awe of all the kids on our site!  Not a slacker in the bunch.  God would energize us each day and they never stopped.  Of course, I couldn’t stop either or JD would give me a hard time.  I LOVE THIS!!! I am already ready for next year. Our homeowner is unbelievable, my site leader is fantastic (Britt) and I have adopted every teenager on the roof of that house!  I am sad to miss the rest of the week.  I am thankful that God let me be here for the beginning.
--Mary Moon

Wednesday, June 23

Or as Pooh would say, “Windsday.”  So it’s journal time again.  We were very productive on our site today.  Goose and Ed Duda worked like crazy today.  They are awesome!  We finished the back porch.  I must thank Lizzie Harkey, Kristen Stevenson and Emily Gerkin for the greatest comic relief ever.  Don’t get me wrong though, they’re hard workers.  With wonderful accents!  We worked late and were rewarded with a fabulous taco dinner! It was delicious!  But the best thing about today. . . the shower that I took.  Oh my, it was glorious.  So um yeah.  I don’t like talking.  Even on paper.  It is so hooooot!!!
--Ashleigh Benoit

Dear Journal,
Our site is almost finished.  We finished the kitchen and the steps to one of the doors.  I really enjoy our site and the people in it.  A highlight of the day is USA scoring a goal in their game against Algeria and people went crazy!  Myself included!  I love Tim Spangler!  He is the man!  Donavan is a BEAST!
--Ryan Taube

My first SCMT and it is turning out to be a wonderful experience.  I am a last minute add on in the kitchen and although it is not a construction site, it is a very important job.  EVERYONE is grateful for meals and snacks and I am happy to serve them—they work so hard and get so tired as they do wonderful things for the people they are helping.  I truly see young people and older folks following God’s command to “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
--Christine Black

Richardson site number one.  Pretty much a wonderful place to spend the hottest 8 hours of the day (minus the “hottest” part, considering we have zero square meters of shade after 10 a.m.).  We’ve worked very hard, built a new porch from scratch, a ceiling, a floor and 3 highly equipped doors.  Go team!  Not to mention Lucy, Clint, Lauren, Jacob, Taube, Dennis, Jim, Anna, Cole and I make great teammates.  We all can do some WORK!  Amen to the South Carolina Mission Trip, as Hoorah as Taube says (while clapping).
--Shelby Armentrout

My site is fun. I have 3 site leaders.  I made floors and painted a kitchen. The work is hard.  There are 5 kittens, two of them are black and white.  One us gray.  2 are orange.  I learned about many useful tools from Carl Duda, who is a good teacher.
--Clayton

Most of the day, I painted the kitchen.  The other bit I listened to the US vs. Algeria soccer game.  The US scored in the 92nd minute. Landon Donovan scored. P.S. Blair is the main.
--Clayton

What a WONDERFUL experience this has been!  Several of us have to leave today and I am so sad!  It has been so nice to meet and get to know so many people. This has been a wonderful gift from God in so many ways.  It is such a wonderful feeling to know that we can work as God’s hands and GIVE to other people.  We have the gift of friendships that can only be built by having 118 people sleeping, eating and showering at the same site.  This gift from God has helped me to grow in SO many ways. We are SO blessed.  Thanks be to God!
--Beth Burns

Salutations, Journal!
Roofing has been quite fun on our work site.  It’s hard work but it’s really fun.  I didn’t know anyone on my site very well, but now I know everyone and we chill.  We are very close to completing our site, and I can’t wait to get it completed.
Sincerely,
--Cole Williams

Good evening. Today our site almost finished the teal trim and yellow house!  We still have a lot of touch-up to do, but we should finish by Friday if everyone works hard.  There are really cute dogs on our work site too which always makes it interesting.  Mr. Brown had to eave today so hopefully we’ll still get everything completed without his help. Austin is a good opera singer.
—Lauren Swords
P.S.  Casey is the man.

Dear Diary,

I have seen God many times through the work we do.  Our homeowner has 7 sons who linger around all day.  We have put in many floor boards and painted the kitchen.  I am sure Mrs. Richards is very proud of our work.  Her house is very improved from before this week.  I love this trip!
--Garrett Thompson

I had a great day today!  It was a lot of hard work, but me and my team could handle it.  Today, we put on the 2nd coat of paint and trim on the house we’re working on.  We also ambushed the two sites near us with water balloons.  Overall, it was a good day!
--John Robertson

Today, I had a great day on my job site.  It was a lot of hard work because it was so hot outside, but God provided clouds for shade.  The week has gotten a lot better after seeing a dead dog on my work site Monday. I can’t wait for my six a.m. wake-up call tomorrow!
--Emily Cude

Dear Diary,

Today I tried to clean an oven full of nasty green and black and yellow grease.  It absolutely sucked.  I told myself God loved me and that got me through the job. This taught me that in every hardship I face, God can get me through it.
--Garrett Thompson

Journal,
Today was a long, and hot day with fun work.  I worked on my site building a floor and stairs until dinner.  Then, afterwards, me and about six other people went to Tim’s site and finished a large portion of the roof.  Can’t wait until tomorrow.  Praise God!
Love,
--Kristen

Dearest Journal,
We have gathered here today for Jesus and the greater good of humanity.  We will leave as SC Mission warriors in the push for a better society.  The site today was just fabulous and I could feel God through every stroke of the paint brush or cut of the saw.  Without this team, this would be nothing.  Thanks to the grace of God.
--Kyle Campbell

Journal,
Today was a good day. We finished our porch and the flooring in one room.  We started the flooring in a different room  I am having a lot of fun and I am learning new things.
--Jordan V

Dear Journal, Today I had the best sandwich so far this trip.  It was a humongous butt sandwich.  It was not quite as big as last year, but contained five butt pieces of bread.  It was awesome.  Thanks, Jane.
--Andrew Duda

Dearest Journal,
I would like to quote “Ice Cube” in saying “Today was a good day.”
--JD Galyon III

Dear Journal,
Our site is almost finished.  We finished the kitchen and the steps to one of the doors.  I really enjoy our site and the people on it.
--Anonymous

Dear Journal,

Today on our site, we finished some flooring and completed the deck/stairs at the front of the house. M it is REALLY hot, but we still had lots of fun working (and trying to listen to the World Cup soccer game on the radio!).  Everyone was happy that the US team won, and we were happy to get some flooring and decking finished.  We’ve seen God in a lot of ways on our site, especially through the leaders who are so patient and willing to teach.  We’ve also seen God in the homeowners who thank us every day and tell us how much they appreciate what we’re doing.  A lot of neighbors have come by as we all just to talk to us or thank us for the work we’ve done this week.  It’s a very rewarding experience.
From,
--Audrey

Well, we had another long, hot day of work.  Today, we finished most of the painting on the house and hung all the siding up. Tomorrow, we’ll do some touch ups on the house and start to build some steps and put up lattice work.  Our homeowners name is Sarah and she’s really sweet.  Though she doesn’t come out much, when she does, you can tell she’s grateful for the work we’re doing.  We also had an adventure today involving 200 water balloons.  We decided that our site (Scott and John’s) would go over and ambush Donna and Jim’s site.  It was pretty crazy.  We were also lucky enough to get ice cream sandwiches courtesy of Matt. They were delicious. Overall, we had an awesome day and tomorrow should be just as amazing! Love,
--Anne Phoenix

Today was so hot, sweat was pouring off everyone but despite that, everyone worked really hard and we almost finished.  All in all, it was a good day.
--Sarah Kincaid

Today we finished putting the second coat of paint on the house and started touch-ups on some spots.  I also had to get on the roof of the house to paint the peaks.  But even though we have done a lot of stuff, we still have a lot left to do.
--Wesley Burns

Well, another day of kitchen duty.  As I have worked, I have become a connoisseur of several things.  I can now tell which bread comes from Piggly Wiggly (hooray!) and which comes from Public (boo!).  I can tell which peanut butter is Jif (my “fave”) and which is Peter Pan by the way they spread.  I know which jellies spread most easily (Welch’s and Wal-Mart).  I know which sharpies show up best on baggies (black—obviously, Duke blue and read).  AND, I know I have seen God in so many ways:

  • Christine (a vegetarian) preparing ham sandwiches.
  • Andrew getting a cold glass of water for Michael
  • Morgan happily being drafted for an ice run
  • Poole providing night time entertainment (aka whiffle ball) for the guys
  • Dana persevering through fatigue
  • Austin never complaining about a broken foot
  • Bonnie providing e with Advil P.M.
  • Donna positioning the fans each night
  • Katey shaving heads
  • Anna braiding hair so much that carpal tunnels must surely have set in
  • Jane meticulously overseeing food
  • And SO MUCH MORE!

You see, you never know who is watching, and you never know who cares, but THANK YOU!
--SNV

Dear Journal,

Today we finished stairs in the front of our house.  We also boarded up a floor in a 90 year old ladies’ room.  She really needs her floors done because they were about to fall in.  Also her stairs are terrible in the back so we will be replacing them.  Mrs. Wilson is very grateful and thankful of us.  It makes me feel good about working when you see the home owner smiling at you.  You know that it is all worth it in the end.  Also, Landon Donovan scored a goal for the US in the World Cup and it inspired everyone since the US won.  Overall, it was a good day and we’re about more than halfway done now.
--Gray Overbey

Dear Journal,
Today I saw God in our home owner who continually brings us refreshments when she has nothing.
--Walker Flynn

Today we continued to fix rotting wood, the rood and worked on painting.  Our colors are like a light yellow and a turquoise which is really fun.  The only annoying thing about the site is our dog, Butch, who always has to be in the middle of the food circle, and he’s kind of unsanitary.  Tomorrow we will finish painting hopefully, if Andrew is brave enough to do the tall parts.
--Blair Thompson Vickers
PS:  Clayton Swords is the man.

We finished putting up siding on the outer house today.  I even got to help.  It was really fun actually using a hammer.  We also painted about 98% of the house.  I learned that I really don’t like painting for long periods of time like that.  It was also really hot which didn’t make it much better.  The house owner is probably about 75 and she’s really shy but she’s nice.  We will definitely finish early tomorrow.
--Quentin Doutt

We have repaired the kitchen floor and the living room floor, painted the kitchen, and the kitchen window.  We are in the shade all day because we are inside or under a tree mostly all day.  The outside shower still felt great even though there was no hot water.  Lunch was, as usual, a huge relief because we are all so hungry.  The sandwiches go down like water.  We were ambushed at lunch by another work site; they threw water balloons at us.  Also, the US beat Algeria today, scoring in the 93rd minute.  Orientation for Carolina is next week. Go Heels!
--Luke Patton

Today was a great day. It was truly amazing that God had given us a breeze on the roof.  Otherwise it would have been unbearable but we got a lot of work done.  We were truly blessed.
--Sarah Kincaid

Dear Journal,
This is my first mission trip, and so far it has been amazing.  I hope and plan to come for many more years to come.  The feeling I get when I see our homeowner’s face when she comes out to see our progress is like no other.  The views of putting another above one’s self is always in my head and the feeling is great.
--Garrett Kirkman

Dear Journal,
Today on my worksite, we talked in Spanish. Slapped some Jay’s, got our crazy pants on and did work!  We stayed until 6 and worked putting pickets on the handicap ramp we’re building.  The inspector came by and told us all the things we had to redo.  We even met the mayor! It was so lovely.  Tomorrow, we’re going to finish the ramp and handrails.  How exciting!
--Emily Gerkin

Very sad it is already Wednesday.  That means we have to leave in two days.  It is heartbreaking to even think about leaving.  I will cherish the next few days.
--Cole Leonard

Dearest Journal,
We had tons o’ fun on our worksite.  Jacob almost fainted so Nathaniel and I built a picket frame.  It was completely perpendicular to the ground and was just perfectly straight without a level!!!  That sounds pretty lame but we were extremely proud.  We named it Baby.  Lizzie H started talking in a ridiculous accent and it stuck.  I think in the voice of Lizzie now.  Our worksite gets along extremely well.  When we got to the site, a neighbor had left cucumbers on the porch.  We should’ve brought them back to Jane! Darn.  Next time.  We will eat them for lunch tomorrow if it arrives at 1:30 again.  Only 2 days left.
--Catie Travis

The trip has been a blast so far.  Out of all the trips I’m sure the site I’m working on is my favorite.  I finally got a roofing site.  The only problem is I’m much closer to the sun and it’s over a hundred degrees.  Regardless of the heat, we’re doing good work and it looks great!
--Andrew Pratt

Dear Journal,
This is my first year on the SCMT.  Not gonna lie, it’s been extremely enjoyable.  I even brought a friend.  I think I’m going to bring one or two more next year.  Making a friend and being a friend has and will be fun. I’m rather disappointed I haven’t come before.  Great fun.
Your new friend,
--Clint Pabon

Dearest Beloved Journal,
It has been over a year since we last talked.  Today was a great day on our site.  We worked 10 hours on a wheelchair ramp and back porch.  Every year, SC gets better and hotter.  I hope to go back as long as I can.  The people here simply amaze me.  The leaders sacrifice so much and work so hard to make this happen and it must be nearly impossible with 120 people. Hopefully, one day, I’ll get there. God bless,
--Phil A.

Hello Journal!
Today my team finished the bedroom of Mrs. Wilson’s house.  It does feel like we had very slow progress but slow and steady wins the race.  We also finished a 4 x 4 deck in front of the door today.  Unfortunately, I’ve got to leave tomorrow to go to Woodward. It’s a camp in PA.  I really wish I could stay the rest of the trip but there’s always next year.
--Les (Clay)

Happy 9th Birthday, Zach!  Aww!  My little brother is getting so old.  Now that I think about it, I’m not so little anymore.  (and I don’t mean height)  I don’t like it.  Ha ha!  I feel like I haven’t done enough yet to be in high school.  And my sister?  Starting middle school?!  What the what?
--Sarah Harris
PS:  My gift is a nail wind chime.  Hope I finish it on time!  (OMG, a rhyme!)

Well, this has been an eventful week.  I have learned to use power tools, people have fallen through the floor, people have gone under the trailer and MUCH more!  Laura had a hard time using a rip fence and actually managed to make a curved board.  But, I would never use that saw anyways so it’s cool.  It has been really fun.  Yay!
--Claire Simons

What a great group of young people on my team!  I really have enjoyed watching them “step out of the box” this week. Watching little Tater Tot (Claire) take a hammer and try taking up floor boards.  It was fun coaching Laura over her fear of power tools.  She can saw with the best of them now (well, as long as it is a straight cut).  Carl’s work ethic makes me proud.  He represents his generation very well.  Luke is an up and coming leader.  He has learned much from his other trips.  Hannah is one of my favorites!  Ashe is a future Jr. Folder Holder!  It’s not that we have become close, but I have watched how she has become close to all the young team members.  They respond to her energy and personality.  She is a born leader.  For an “old guy,” it has been so much fun to watch these kids g!  To watch what they can do.  I look forward to watching for many years to come.
--Butch Doutt

Dear Journal,
I certainly enjoy being with and sharing time with the youth.  It gives me a great chance to get to know them as we work together to accomplish a task.  I do not feel as confident working on many tasks.  However, I learn from them.  We are always working together to achieve the task and do an outstanding job.  I have also enjoyed being told what to do and to achieve it myself.  God is present here with each and every person I have been with as they work with a smile on their face.  They enjoy each other and feel glad to contribute.
--Ed

Dear Journal,
The week has been very good so far and there’s still a lot more to come.  We should be done by tomorrow on the many tasks that we have had.  Carl cracked me up all day and Scott/John’s worksite got us with a surprise attack of water balloons. Oh, revenge will come!  A new dog that we haven’t seen showed up today.  It was a pit bull, but it was so sweet.  I’m so excited for Charleston!  PS:  Clayton is my new best friend!  I love SCMT!
--Lauren Greeson

Our site so far is going great this week.  Just got our landing and stairs done and the flooring inside is coming along great.  Ryan Taube is just as crazy as usual.  Think he needs a nice cold shower after losing at ERS.  He is still ranting about it.  I just laughed a little and he challenged me to a game. Time is on him now so that’s game OVER.  We went and helped out at Tim’s site tonight after dinner.  Got a lot of shingles in place.  So far I’m real glad I got a chance to make it down ere. Meeting a lot of good people that are here for the first time and I think they are having fun and learning a little bit.
--Aaron

Dear Journal,
At first I was bummed that I didn’t know anyone on my site except for Mr. Kinsey.  Now, however, meeting and sharing time with these 13 other people has been so much fun!  I’m so glad I got put on this site, because making friends adds so much to the experience of this trip.  They are all blessings to me, and so is the opportunity to come here. Love,
--Halah

Dear Journal,
The mission trip is great.  It’s been a lot of fun this week with Tim’s site.  Today we took off shingles, re-patched holes in the roof, put down membrane, and put down new shingles.  We also prayed with the homeowner.  I can’t wait until tomorrow.
--Morgan Ledford

Hey!  This week has been wonderful!  I have learned sooo much!  I learned how to floor a room and how to use power tools (everything except a saw).  My site has also been very great.  Everyone worked incredibly hard every day and they always seemed to do what they were asked.  I’m really upset that we only have a few more days left but I know they will be great!
--Kara Gustaveson

Hello Journal!
Today, as all other days of this trip, has been very productive and fulfilling.  We, as well as the other work sites, are meshing well and getting a lot of work done, though it isn’t always easy.  The roof is a scorcher—well over 100 considering the heat index, but with plenty of water breaks everyone seems to be doing okay.  Talk to you later.
--Matt Spangler

Today we are finishing the second room and we finished the stairs coming off the porch.  So altogether today was a good day because we got a lot accomplished.  It is a lot of hard work but I am having a great time.
--Austin Cain

Today was Wednesday and we continued working on the Blondell house.  Our team (Sarah K, Sarah H, Tim, Ben, Rachel, Brittian, Cole W, Anthony R, Seth, Kelsey, Casey, Morgan, Poole, Joey, Adam and Bonnie) is awesome. We had pretty much finished roofing the front side of the Blondell house,  Today we stripped the back side, laid membrane, and began roofing the back side.  This all sounds very minimal but, in fact, it tool all of us all day to do these tasks—in the blistering heat, and fatigued from yesterday!  We have visited in “off” moments and I do mean moments! Everyone has shown me Christ in their willing attitude and their selfless devotion to the job. Everyone treats me like a “China doll” that might break at any minute—and I do love them for that. Love to all—
--Bonnie

Whew!  What a long day.  The official work day ended at 9 p.m. for me and 8 others. Began the same as any other but sometime before lunch came the entire site was taking a water break and our homeowner, Mrs. Blendell, joined us.  She said, “God don’t always come when we want, but he is always on time.” It just kinda stuck with me. Not much happened till we returned right in time for dinner.  Then I happily volunteered to go back and put down more shingles.  That is why I am here and do not mind working longer.  The good thing is that I know I am going to be sleeping well tonight.
--Rachel Bradley

Dear Journal,
So far this week I have seen many interesting things.  I half expected it, because this is Hollywood, South Carolina.  On day one, half an hour in, I found a dead dog on our site.  Shortly after, another dog came and stole Emily’s glove and ran away with it.  On day two, Tim Spangler laid in Rayn Taube’s bed. Walker kept me up one night with his t=pterodactyl noises.  Just last night, we could not get Taube to fall asleep.  I also saw Emily drop a board on a box of nails and knocked them all over.  My body was painted today and I learned a new country song.  Carl continues to look Diesel and Walker passed at an overdose of Benedryl.  Andrew Long told the US to score, and no more than a minute later, Donovan put it in the net.  Halfway through, this has been a great week with my new best friend, Emily Cude.
--Andrew Duda

Mr. Journal,
Today was another quality day in the kitchen.  Once again we made sandwiches.  SURPRISE!  And to rest my foot, I stayed and prepared dinner by myself.  However, I was unknowingly serenading Dennis and Matt because they had come back early to leave.  So when I realized I was not alone, I did the only thing a self-respecting singer would do—sing louder.  Thus another successful day in the kitchen.  I’m tired of writing.

Thursday, June 24

Journal,
Alas, today, Matt, Clay and I are returning to our city of Greensboro, NC.  I am very sad that we must leave for this trip has been life-changing not only for the people we are helping but also myself.  I have learned that hard work and dedication can make a huge difference and I know that everyone has made a difference. Thank you for welcoming a new member to the SCMT team.
--Dixon Holland

As always, I had a great time.  Sorry for missing Charleston with everyone.  I’m proud of everyone for their hard work.  Also, thanks a bunch to my team for patience and hard work. See y’all back in Greensboro.

We finished up our site today!  Not only did we finish up all the siding, but we also had enough time to build two sets of stairs (with railings) but we also had enough time to put lattice around the bottom of the whole house.  The house looks great.  If you saw a before and after picture of our house, you wouldn’t believe it was the same house.  It feels great to see the joy of our homeowner’s face.
--Garrett Kirtkman

Hey! Today was an awesome day.  God is great! Our crew has been working for four hard, hot and humid days and now, it is Thursday afternoon.  Sarah, our home owner, has been listening to our hammers, saw, music and our cheering for our USA team in the World Cup and who knows what else. . . I have realized that Sarah is shy and lonely, but each day that we show up, she has been peering around the corners to see what we are up to. . . Each time we talk to her, we find out a little more about her. She is important to God. God loves her.  We love her.  She is important to us.  As one of our crew leaders, I asked Sarah to come outside today to see her house, all the siding us up and painted a brilliant green with white trim. She has new stairs to her front door and as well as her side door.  While we were looking around, her pastor stopped by.  He loved the new look and I turned and saw the joy in her face, It was awesome.  I asked her if I could give her a hug and she said “yes.”  It was awesome. God is great.  Did I mention she is lonely?  She told me that her two sons have passed away. They both served our country. She is 79.  I think we brought a little joy to her life this week.  I pray that God will comfort Sarah, help her find joy in her life, protect her, love her, let us find ways to serve her and those that are in need.  In his name,
--John Cain

The whole week has been great so far.  I can’t wait to go to the city on Friday.  I want to come on this trip next year.
--Andrew Long

Today we did some of the finishing touches on the house.  I had to go on the porch to paint the post ad it really stinks in there.  It was almost toxic. Later we found out it was coming from a bucket of water with dead bugs in it, but we are almost done.
--Wesley Burns

Great work site and doing lots that will make Ms. Sarah’s life better. Our crew:  John C, Poole, Christine, Quentin, Zoe, Andrew, Beth, John R, Sophie, Anne, Kyle, Halah, Garrett.  Already looking forward to next year.
--Scott K

I have been covering my legs with tattoos and they go away or smear away when I sweat at the worksite.  My favorite thing to draw is flames going down my leg.  I’ve drawn flames, stars, sun, dragon, pi, flowers, butterflies, apple, a deck of cards with the ace of spades face up, and my name several times.  Not all of those have been on my leg ‘cause I drew some on other people’s arms.  I finished my gift today. . . It’s pretty stupid but I like the Bible verse that goes along with it. (Isaiah:40:31).  I borrowed an awesome book that helps one find Bible verse that you can find by using one word that should be in the Bible verse.  Yep, pretty awesomeness.
--Eryn Phipps

Today my site finished.  We built stairs on the front porch and finished the floors in the second room.  After that I went to Tim’s site and helped them roof. I had a lot of fun.
--Jordan

Today we finished our house.  Or. . . almost finished.  We just need to put up the remaining lattice work around the bottom of the house.  With the new paint and the new lattice, this house looks brand new,  There has been a dog that has been visiting us for the past couple days. We have named him Mud because he is so dirty.  He is really nice and we like to think of him as our mascot (or several people on the site including me have become very attached to this dog.).  I sure will miss Mud when we leave.
--Quentin Doutt

Today was an awesome day!  We got so much done. We put linoleum down in both the kitchen and living room and painted the kitchen.  The rooms look great now that there is a fresh coat of paint and new floors.  This morning we were happily surprised when we arrive at our site by the sight of the furniture on the lawn.  Our homeowner, Mrs. Richards, had her sons move the furniture that we were not looking forward to moving.  At the end of the day, the home owners’ grandson, Keylon, was helping us pack up.  It was so cool to see everyone on our site play with him and make him smile and laugh.  So basically, in the end, today was an amazing day and I am sad that the trip is coming to an end.
--Laura Grady

So today was really amazing!  Lots of dancing, lots of drilling, lots of dirt.  So, the norm.  We have yet to meet our homeowner but at least 15 people have stopped by on separate occasions to check on our progress so she must be a very amazing woman!  We’re almost done, only one day left of getting completely filthy and I’m very excited!  SCMT ’10!  WOOT!
--Lizzie Harkey

I haven’t written recently because I have started a new thing—hats!  Susan brought maybe 50 or 70 plain white hats that we could be shaded on the work site.  So, I decorate Laura Grady’s and then, BAM, I got tons of requests for hats. So far I have decorated 12 hats but I love the creative outlet.  I have 4 more to go before we leave.  Any way we are putting down linoleum, painting a kitchen and repairing floors after we rip up the old floor.  We’ve moved furniture, crawled under the trailer, cut, glued, painted till we can’t do any more.  But I love our site and we are a little family and it’s adorable! Love,
--Hannah Burt

Today, we pretty much finished up.  Good job this week. Will remember it forever. Black chicks dig me, also.
--Poole

Bonjour cahier,
Aujerd hui Matt, Dixon et moi summes rentre a Greensboro.  Je suis tres triste.  L’annee deriere est tous il ya. (Translated: Hello Journal, Today, Matt, Dixon and I are going back to Greensboro.  I’m very sad.  But there’s always next year to add on what I can’s say in French.  We started working on the flooring and fixing the house’s AC. For some reason, there was a dead animal in it.  I wish I could stay to finish our job and go to Charleston, but life happens. Over and out)
--Clay M  (Les)

Best day of work ever!!!  The ladies we were working for made us lunch and it was delicious!  Yum.  It was curried chicken with rice.  Gotta go.
--Kieran

Dear Journal,
Yesterday my site attacked Donna’s site and Jim Brogden's site with water balloons!  We told them we were bringing ice cream and then jumped out and hit them.  It was hilarious.  For revenge today they dumped a water cooler on John and got Sophie with a hose.  I guess retaliation was suspected. Anyways, I love SCMT!
--Christine S.

Dear Journal,
I really like Jason Morez and Jack Johnson.  They make good music.  Walker let me listen to them and now I really like them.
--Poole

Dear Journal,
Today is the last day on my work site and I’m really excited to see all our hard work!  I’m also very excited for Charleston!  I can’t wait till next year’s mission trip! Love,
--Kelsey

Yesterday was one of the best and hardest days so far  My site finished our work on our house:  we put up a door on Ms. Richardson’s bedroom and we were finally done.  Once finished, we moved to Britt Blaylock’s site.  We worked on the roof of a garage.  The home owner, Ms. Small, was so nice!  She insisted that every girl on the site get their hair braided by her She braided the ends of my already braided pigtails and put beads in.  She also made Jamaican food for everyone on the site and had enough for the original site workers and my site.  Their site was extremely hot!! It was so fun though.
--Lucy Shank

South Carolina 2010—what a trip!
Dirty as ever—
Hot as ever—
Sweaty as ever—
Buggy as ever—
More people than ever—
Saw God every day—
Learned something new every day—
Best kids ever—
Food as fabulous as ever—
Can’t wit till next year!
--Donna

So far, on our site, we have torn TWO roofs off, tar-papered the entire thing, and we put ice and water guard in the valleys of the gable.  We are almost done with shingling the entire house and if we decide not to start a new project, then we can be done today.  Our house owner is amazing.  Her sister-in-law lives with her and every day she brings us out some drinks and offers us watermelon.  Today she says she has a special surprise so who knows?! Exciting stuff.
--Mary Catherine

Yesterday, we almost finished the site that I’m on  One of the important aspects of the progress made yesterday was SC’s famous amount of pranks.  Our site decided to put together a team-building exercise.  For this exercise, my site bought out Piggly Wiggly of water balloons and bombed two sites.  It was great!  In the evening afterwards, Carl claimed he was organizing a group to attack my site in the night.  I let myself become so paranoid that I didn’t fall asleep until one and slept fully clothed.  Including my shoes. Let’s just say I think they won this battle, but they will never win the war.
--Zoe

It’s Thursday and the last full day of work, so the last day I have to make about 250 sandwiches with the lovely kitchen ladies.  Working in the kitchen has been a change of pace from last year’s roof work.  Meaning crazy boring, but I’ve gotten to take a nap even though one was only 15 minutes on top of a table.  The best part is undoubtedly how excited everyone is when you deliver the food.  I’ve had a great time regardless and I hope I’ll make it again next year.  Time to make some sandwiches.
--Austin Jeffries

So far I ad had an amazing time on this trip.  It is truly life-changing and is as fun as it gets.  All the people here welcome me with open arms, and it’s amazing how many more friends I have now.  I can’t wait for more SCMT fun and work!
--Dixon Holland

Journal,
Today was the second to last day, and we are almost done!  We have put plywood up, caulked, painted, and put up white siding.  Our homeowner was just so great!  She was pleased with everything we did, especially all the rails and steps.  Can’t wait to finish off the touches and work for Jesus.
--Kyle Campbell

This counts.
--Poole

No it doesn’t.
--Anonymous

Today was really cool. It was my first time roofing. We finished our site so we went to a roofing site.  Truly have enjoyed this.  I have learned a lot and gotten to know people.  We listened to Taylor Gerkin talk about philosophy and religion for awhile.  Quite thought-provoking.  Some people played a prank on Ryan Taube.  He is not great to behold while angry. Sincerely,
--Clint Pabon

Journal,
Today our homeowner prepared us all Jamaican style food come lunch time and it was delicious! My favorite was the rice and beans mix.  Fantastic!  From what I could tell, EVERYONE enjoyed it and we had 2 extra teams (people from each team, making 15 people teams) come help and they also got the lunchtime treat.  As always, I’m sad to see the week already coming to a close. It’s always a great experience though.  And it keeps me coming back year after year.  I’m going to watch Jacob Dooley build a card tower (which Taube just knocked down).
--Maddie
PS:  Interesting reactions.  Taube’s mad about something.

Journal,
It was really hot today but everyone on my site worked HARD.  We are almost finished.
--Justine Dassow

Today was hot again. . . surprise there.  We’re almost done because everyone worked really hard.  We’re finished shingling today and, all we have left is to do the ridge cap.  I can’t wait to go home, but this trip was quite nice.  Sincerely,
--Cole Williams

Dear Journal,
What’s Gucci? Actually, I really detest that phrase, so I apologize for opening an entry with it.  Let’s try again.

Dear Journal,
What’s up? These type of outings always make me question my sanity to a degree because of the following question: Whom am I addressing? You’re not a person or anything. Anyway, I had a good day in Hollywood, South Carolina, of course.  We’re almost finished with the roof (which, by the way, is significantly larger than the roof on the other roofing site) and came down the ladder with a tangible sense of accomplishment.  Tomorrow, we finish the ridge cap and return to the church off frolicking in Charleston.  T-Bonz rocks! Sincerely,
--Ben Stevenson

“Sure, I can help out in the kitchen!”  It’s been 3 years since my last SC Mission trip.  Loved it then. . . love it still.  Yesterday Carl gave me a hug and sad, “thanks for lunch.” I remember when he was in the 7th grade.  Now he is a young adult and a strong leader among the group.  I remember Rachel helping paint a house when she was a freshman.  She’s doing it all now, from the roof to the floor.  Gracious and mature young woman.  Now I sit with 8th grader Morgan in the kitchen as she tells me about her work here.  I know I’ll watch her grow strong, confident, compassionate and loving—just like Carl and Rachel.  I see the face of God in all the faces of these kids.  Time to prep dinner!
--Teresa Lowell

Today we sat down. . .
--Anonymous

Dear Journal,
Best day of work EVER!
--Anonymous

Today we practically finished the house.  It looks so good.  When you’re driving down the road, you’ll definitely notice this beautiful pale yellow house with lovely teal shutters,.  That is the house we painted!  Guess what?  We have an Erika on our site and the site is on Erika Place.  AANNDDD, it’s spelled the same way!  Isn’t that awesome!  My group is sooooo awesome.  We have great conversations while we work and take breaks.  The doggies on our site are so cute.  I feel really sorry for the one who is chained up. . . I think she’s pregnant. Ms. Simmons thanked us and told us about her funeral plans which was sad but at the same time, gratifying to know we’re impacting her life.  She wants to be buried in a white dress with a white hearse and when people come to her house after the funeral, she wants them to see her pretty house She turns 80 on July 4th.
--Alie

What I did today:

  • helped Andrew paint west side of house
  • chatted with K Steves
  • laughed at Kyle Campbell
  • gave Andrew a manicure
  • finished my gift
  • played (and won) catch phrase with the dream team
  • had a heart to heart with Tim
  • called John to the table
  • had to rinse paint out of my burning, blinded eye.

Twas a good day.
--Blair

Dear Journal,

As my first year at SC with the mission team, I feel like I’ve been ion the trip for a long time. The people are great, the food is amazing, and the work is exhausting.  To me, the youth feels like a HUGE family.  I’m most likely going to continue to attend at least some of the youth meetings and definitely next year.
--Seth Hodge

Show me your winkie face.

Dear Journal,
We are so close to being done on Tim’s site.  We just have to do the peak of the house.  It’s been a long week but it’s been great.  I can’t wait for tomorrow so I can go shopping with friends.  I have met a lot of people this week.  I know their names but I really didn’t get to talk with everyone.  Can’t wait to be home.
--Morgan Ledford

Today we talked about movies at lunch.  It was really fun.
--Anonymous

Dear Journal,
Today was a fun-filled day on the job site!  We were very productive and we got a lot of work completed.  There are two dogs that hang around our site and we fed them today at lunch and gave them some water.  We also learned how to solve an algorhytm that Mrs. Kincaid gave us.  It was totally hot outside, but the work was worth it!  Totally!
--Emily Cude

Dear Journal,
Today was a great day.   We got a lot done.  Clay, Dixon, and Matt went home today.  It is going to be different without them.  Dixon and Clay did leave me a not about being “fat.”  It was funny.
--Henry Phoenix

Today was stressful, but cool.  It’s just a lot of hard work to paint a big house.  It’s fun having Andrew Long on my site because we’re really good friends. It’s also fun because Justine has a lot of great songs on her i-pod and she played her i-pod while we painted. The guys on my site are really nice and easy to get along with.  Elizabeth Brown is really cool, and even though I barely knew her before the trip, we get along really well.

Journal,
I always forget how much I like/enjoy the mission trip until I get here.  I’m on a roofing site this year and it’s a lot easier than my first year when I roofed.  This roof is a lot less steep and nowhere near as high off the ground either.  And we have a really good team this year.  Ready for a productive last day.
--Maddie

Dear Journal,
Over this week we have had some interesting experiences with old Ms. Simons.  From the moment she laughed at the dead dog to her yelling about the only thing her grandkids wanted was her to cook them food or give them money.  Even though she is deaf and REALLY hates dogs.  Hopefully, cleaning up will be a breeze and she will love her freshly painted house.  Sad the trip is coming to the end. Rock on,
--Rachel Williams

Today was really good. We are basically done on our site. We are cleaning up the house and the homeowner is so happy.  I will love the rest of the trip.
--John Robertson

Today was a really dirty day.  It was hot and sweaty and sooty and I didn’t realize how bad I really looked until I saw my reflection in the church van window.  It was really weird to see myself because I’ve been so wrapped up in my surroundings and the awesome things I get to do that I lose my sense of self. I feel so wrapped up in the project that I don’t focus on myself which is great!  It’s been a great trip so far and I’m sure there is more fun to come!
--Lizzie Harkey

I liked my site this year.  Donna, Butch and Carl were all good leaders and we got a lot of work done.  Our homeowners were nice and had a big family.  They were pleased with the work we did.
--John Harkey

To me, this is the hardest day.  The heat is starting to get to us, but the anticipation of finishing the work and heading to Charleston makes it bearable.  Thanks to all the leaders—youth and adults—for staying strong and focused the entire week.  To the “Hollywood Crew,” you are the best!  Service to others and above self is good for each one of us. Lastly, bless the kitchen crew. Knowing good food waits for us is wonderful.
--Jim Brogden

Today was the second to last day of work and the last full work day.  At this point, I am very tired and very unclean.  However, I also realize how much fun a good solid day of work is.

Hiking is really walking where you can see.  Old people must take hikes by accident.

Dear Journal,
Today on our work site, I though I was going to die this morning.  Catie and I snuck away from Jacob and took a nap in the bed of the truck.  It was lovely. Then Phil had to drag me out of the truck and back to work.  We drank lots of Gatorade, ate many chips, and even met the mayor.  We finally got back at 8, and I gave my brother a hug, getting all my nasty site dirt on his clean shirt.  He’s not happy with me.
--Emily Gerkin

Thursday. . . It’s morning and I’m eating a pop-tart that has berry in it and that’s it. Peace.

Dear Journal,
Today was a good day. We pretty much finished at our work site.  We put in two floors and really improved Mrs. Wilson’s house.  She was very happy and kept repeating “Thank you, Jesus!” Today we finished flooring in the den.  We fixed what we could of the damaged duct work under the house and fixed the stairs on the back porch.  The family was very grateful for all we have done and it was great to see how happy they were.
--Henry Phoenix

Dear Journal,
Yesterday we did a lot of work.  Some of our site members even stayed till 9 at night!

Dear Journal,
I love my main man, Ryan Taube.  But although I am missing home, I feel good about doing God’s work.  I see generosity all around, whether it be the homeowners or the people on the mission trip.  I have so much fun.  My worksite calls ourselves “the A Team!”  I feel good when I help people.  I love this trip and I love the “A-Team!”
--JD Galyon III

I love cheesy toast! So much!  We eat so well on this trip it’s ridiculous.  I don’t even eat this well at home.  I love Mrs. Harkey so much.  She lost her kitchen partner, Mrs. Shank, and she steps up to feed all 120 of us.  We have the best food plain and simple.  I love SC and I love sneaking into the kitchen and getting some of the famous Rotunda cookies.

Friday, June 25

Today is the last day, so sad.  It’s going to be a great morning!  Britt’s site has the ½ of the garage roof to finish and then we are done!  It has been a wonderful week, and awesome weather! I was blessed with such a great team this year and everyone worked hard.  Lily’s house is beautiful.  I can’t wait to come next year!

I love all these kids! The shy ones, the happy ones, the smart ones, the sassy ones, the sweet ones, the cute ones the hungry ones, the dirty ones, the slow ones, the “little off” ones, the “on a mission” ones, the exhausted ones and the delightful ones.  What a great group to spend a week on the floor with. Love,
--Mama Harkey

We’re about to go to Charleston!  I’m so excited. This is my 2nd year and I plan on coming until I’m not invited any more. . . or something like that.  I can’t figure out why everyone dresses up.  I’m wearing my favorite jacket and my newest shirt and some pants that I hate. My gift will probably be chosen last.  It’s shiny and small. . . I didn’t really take any time with it.
--Eryn

Today was my last day on the work site and I’m very sad for this trip to be over.  I’m already counting down the days until next year. I saw God many ways this week but mostly in his beautiful creation and Mrs. Wilson.  We are off to Charleston later today.  Thank you, Jesus.
--Kristen K

Dear Journal,
Today is the last day of working.  I am looking forward to finishing our site for the lovely Miss Simmons.  I hope that she enjoys her freshly painted house for year to come.  She turns 80 July 4th.  Happy Birthday!
--Rachel Williams

Finished our site this morning.  Gray is great with the shop vac, and Kristen, Audrey, Jordan, Mason and Henry were awesome with the utility knives trimming the insulation foam.  Tom (our fearless leader) took care of the air vent, and the floor was done.  We moved some furniture and rugs back in and Mrs. Wilson has a place to go without a sagging floor.  She was very appreciative of our work, and even wondered if we were one large family.  A porch and steps out front, steps out back and 2 floors replaced.  Not a bad week.  As always, it was great to get to know the youth who I do not know so well. Austin, Alex, and Aaron and Clay and Matt were at our site earlier in the week and did an awesome job.  A tiring but enlightening and fun week. I almost forgot—at night in out breakout group the young adults have handled our devotions.  Phillip, Anna and Hannah have each made me think and have given me things to work on in my faith journey.  I really thank them for that.
--Debbie Hayes

Gray J checking in again.  Jasmine and Lilie were the home owners names.  They were the sweetest ladies  Jasmine was Lilie’s sister-in-law and Lilie was the home owner of the house, I’m guessing.  Every day, Jasmine came out to watch is work, and she brought us out a cooler of refreshing drinks,  Jasmine was Jamaican and had an awesome accent.  Lilie was great as well but stayed inside most of the week because her back was hurt.  On Thursday, they braided the girls’ hair, gave everyone a Jamaican lunch, and gave everyone a really nice Charleston t-shirt.  It was a great week in Hollywood.
--Gray Johnston

Today we finished all the work at our job site.  It was a short work day and it felt good to finally see the finished product after a whole week of work.  While I’m glad the work is done, it was also enjoyable and I’m sure I’ll miss it. I’m excited for Charleston this evening and for returning home again tomorrow.
--Taylor G.

Today we finished a very large roof, and not only did we finish, we finished fast and in an excellent manner.  I had the best site I have ever been on, with Britt as my leader.  We had a great group with no slackers, as well as very nice homeowners.
--Gray J

Today we worked on finishing the roof on Britt’s site.  While a daunting task, the cooperation and teamwork of our crew made the work considerably easier and also more fun.  Our home owner even bought us shirts and made us lunch which was a great gesture.
--Taylor G

The last day of work is today and there’s only three people going to our work site to finish up a window.  Charleston and the gift exchange is tonight.  Our homeowners were so grateful for our work on their floor.  Their floor was rotting down and had holes in places. I love Emily—We will only spend about 30 minutes there today, but it will make a big difference.
--Luke Patton

½ a day = ½ of a garage roof.  Ambition, determination and youth needs to trump fatigue and limited time table.  Pray for us.
--Britt Blaylock

So today, just a couple of us went back to the site to finish the lattice.  We got Sarah some flowers and she was happy.  I took a cold shower.  And rocked out to some MJ.  It’s the anniversary of his death.  My brother passed out yesterday.  Cool beans.  I’m hungry.
--Halah

Alright, so it’s hot. And right now I’m in the car going to Piggly Wiggly with Halah.  And Erika.  This is awesome.
--Justine

We have reached the finish line.  The youth at Christ UMC are amazing.  We are so blessed to have so many talented, hardworking young men and young women.  They jump in with enthusiasm on any task and have fun while they are doing whatever task is required. It is wonderful to watch the college age kids and older High School students provide guidance and assistance to the first timers.  This is my 5th trip and I enjoy each one more.
--Tom Shank

Today we finished our site and went into Charleston.

Today was awesome. We finally finished our work and the homeowner was so grateful.  She prayed with us and then taught is a valuable life lesson.  She said that if we killed for drugs the world would go to hell.  All in all, this was a great last day.
--Mason

Today Luke, Donna and I went back to our site to finish up the last thing which was cleaning a window.  When we came back to the church, Donna found the water bomb toys that we thought we gave to Keylon so we took them back since he was so excited when we told him he could keep the water bombs.  Tonight’s Charleston!!!  I can’t wait.  I am sad the trip is over, but I am looking forward to sleeping in my own bed and not on an air mattress.
--Laura

It has been a wonderful week!  I started out with Dennis and Jim building a porch, screen doors, regular doors, fixing a floor and ceiling in the shortest house I’ve ever been in.  The ceilings were about 6 feet and the doorways 5 and a half feet.  It was a dollhouse. We were able to finish it all by Thursday which was amazing.  The team really worked well together.  After finishing around 9 on Thursday, we went to Britt’s site to roof for the rest of the day and Friday.  It was finished too!  Now we are all cleaning up the gym and getting ready for Charleston.
--Anna

Looking back in the week, I realize that I’ve learned a lot about demolition and construction.

Saturday, June 26

Dear Journal,
Unfortunately, all great things must come to an end, and now we pack up to head back to Greensboro. It has been a fantastic week of extreme work and sleep deprivation that has awarded me with many new friends and stories to spread for generations.  With this final entry I want to say thank you to everyone for making this one of the best weeks I will experience in my life.  And I hope that I can take what I’ve learned and apply it to my own life.
