It’s Vacation Bible School volunteer recruitment time again! This year we thought we’d get creative, so we decided to Google “VBS Volunteers” for ideas. Our favorite, Three Ways to Avoid Getting Tricked into Volunteering for VBS, from Christian writer Jon Acuff:
- If someone with glitter on their clothes approaches, do not make eye contact.
- If someone asks you what your summer is going to be like, answer “busy.”
- Don’t fall for the “I guess my wife signed us up” technique. In which you men out there get approached by a VBS recruiter. The recruiter says “What grade do you want to teach at VBS this summer?” you answer, because you assume your wife has already volunteered you. Then BOOM! You’re the new recruit!
Funny, right? But, for just a minute, think about your VBS experiences as a child, or your own children’s or grandchildren’s experiences. Now imagine if those teachers, craft leaders, music instructors, nursery helpers, storytellers, games leaders, snack providers, the list goes on, didn’t have time to volunteer. What would you have missed? What would your children have missed?
This year our theme is Parables: Sowing Seeds with Stories. We will live as disciples in disciple groups and learn about Jesus and the very important truths He teaches us. While our children will be learning through watching dramas, making crafts, singing, listening to storytelling and playing games this summer, soon enough they will be adults. Their VBS memories, and those who volunteered their time, will shape their future of Christian love, giving, and service.
So let us invite you to get involved and make a difference this summer. Whether you have volunteered for several years or you want to try it for the first time, we’d love to have you! Check your calendar and save the date for the week of June 29–July 2. We need volunteers to: teach preschool, teach elementary-age children (K–5th Grade), lead crafts, lead games, act in dramas, tell stories, serve snacks, organize and/or drive carpool for children of working parents, take pictures and videos, and work in the nursery. We welcome volunteers from ages 11 to 100. You will be provided with everything you will need, even childcare! Join us for the whole week or just a couple of days.
