Summer is often a tough time for food pantries and hunger ministries. In order to help fill the bare shelves in our community, Christ Church is participating in the city-wide Freedom from Hunger: Feeding the 5,000 Community Food Drive for Greensboro Urban Ministry. Churches and agencies around Greensboro are joining together with a goal of collecting 90,000 pounds of food to help those struggling to eat.
Please spread the word throughout your neighborhoods and community meetings and events that, through this Sunday (August 3), Christ Church is one of the drop-off points for food to be donated to Greensboro Urban Ministry.
Suggested Food Items for Donation (please no glass or open items):
- Tuna, salmon, etc.
- Beef stew, spam, corned beef
- Peanut butter, 18 oz.
Greens, e.g. turnip greens, mixed vegetables
Tomatoes, corn, green beans
Peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, applesauce
Other Items! • Soups
- Sugar, 2 lbs.
- Dry milk
- Oatmeal, 18 oz.
- Macaroni & cheese
- Bags of dry beans
- Rice, 1 lb. or larger bags
This Sunday, Christ Church will join churches around the city in reading and preaching on Matthew 14:13–21, which is the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000. Since this Sunday is not only the end of this food drive, but also the next First Food Sunday at Christ Church, we’re going to do something special in worship. Please bring food with you to donate. During communion, you will have the opportunity to offer canned food and/or financial donations near the altar.
If you have physical limitations and are unable to carry heavy items, members of our Local Missions committee will be happy to assist you to bring in your donations from your car, but we encourage you to hold on to one item so that you may participate in the service by bringing a donation to the altar as an act of worship.
Let’s join together as the Christ Church community and as the Greensboro community in serving those in need!
