We made it! Seven days, twenty-one meals, and 850 sandwiches later, the 2014 South Carolina Mission Trip was officially a success! One hundred and five youth and adults traveled safely to and from Hollywood, South Carolina, for an incredibly wonderful week of repairing homes in the hot summer sun.
For the seventh year, the mission team was gracefully hosted by Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where the crew ate, showered, and slept during the week. Almost 20 youth came on the trip for the first time, where they joined the rest of the team in repairing roofs, ceilings, windows, and floors, and painting homes.
“What I find so special about this trip is hope. It gives hope to the homeowners, the community, and the mission team,” said Maggie Rotunda, rising senior, at the beginning of the week.
Rising sophomore Emily Harris said, “I am so glad I got to meet new people and become closer to my church family! I loved praying with my homeowners and making their home more accessible.”
“I liked leading and teaching the younger kids, who are all really great,” said Natalie Williams, a rising senior.
“I truly can see how big a difference we make in this community. God is truly here this week,” wrote longtime team member Ed Duda.
Besides working, the crew enjoyed a day trip to Kiawah Island on Sunday, celebrated the life of beloved mission trip veteran Tim Spangler on Wednesday, and ended the week in Charleston, SC, on Friday evening. That night, Matt Gravely brought the world’s largest sleepover to an end with an impromptu concert of Tom Petty and John Mayer tributes, accompanied by a group of dads on the trip.
Susan Norman Vickers, SCMT’s adored queen, wrote, “I love the mission trip. Besides all the wonderful work that gets done, there’s also the great opportunity to see how people have grown in the past year.”
While workers’ morale is always high, it cannot solely fuel the mission trip. SCMT would not be possible without the love and support of Christ United Methodist Church members. If you would like to show your support through a donation, please designate your offering to “SCMT”, or be on the lookout for special fundraisers in the upcoming year!
