March 2 is the last Sunday after the Epiphany, also called Transfiguration Sunday. The sacrament of Holy Communion will be observed at all services of worship. It is also First Food Sunday, so please bring canned goods to Holy Grounds for Greensboro Urban Ministry. In addition, those of you who collect change with the “Change a Life” offering are reminded to place your change in the black buckets in the Gathering Space. Hope to see you at worship this Sunday.
In this week's traditional services the words of the opening hymn "Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies" reflect upon the light of Christ as we celebrate his Transfiguration. In addition, the Hymn of Response at 11, "O Wondrous Sight, O Vision Fair" directly retells the story of that unusual event. Other hymns in these two services will mention God's call to serve others in His name as one of the ultimate results of our own "mountaintop experiences".
Choral music in the two services was chosen to prepare our hearts for the Sacrament of Holy Communion, which will follow immediately the anthem. The opening voluntary at 11 is a setting by Healey Willan of the Hymn of Response, and closigng voluntaries at both services are settings by J.S. Bach of the ancient baptism hymn "Christ Our Lord to Jordan Came" and are played in honor of both the Transfiguration and of the Sacrament of Baptism to be held at the 11 AM service.
