Sunday, September 7, is the thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost. It's also Promotion/Christian Education Sunday! Rev. Louis Timberlake will preach a message that coincides with our Christian Education theme for the year, God's Garden of Wonders, based on the scriptures 2 Peter 3:18 and Matthew 13:1–2, 31–32.
Promotion/Christian Education Sunday
This is our first Sunday of the new year in Christian Education at Christ Church. Our theme is God’s Garden of Wonders, lifting up Christian Education in all four worship services. From 9:50am to 10:50am, we’ll have a special speaker for all adults in the Sanctuary, Rev. Buck Cochran, from Peace Haven Farm.
For youth, we’ll have a gathering in the Youth Building, followed by a time to meet new Sunday School teachers.
Children will meet new their Sunday School teachers in new classrooms, with a special lesson and snack for all!
First Food Sunday
In addition to being Christian Education Sunday, it’s First Food Sunday. Because the donated food is flying off the shelves at GUM, they have again asked local churches to sponsor food drives. If everyone who attends Christ UMC brings at least one can of food, we could once again make a difference! Please mark your calendars and take on this challenge to leave at least one can of food in the Holy Grounds. Your one can of food could show hungry families in Greensboro that we are all wonders in God’s garden.
It’s also Communion Sunday, and we will only celebrate the sacrament of Communion in the 8:30am traditional service and the 11:15am Spark service. Gluten-free elements will be available for those that require it.
We celebrate Promotion Sunday through the hymns "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" and "Go, Make of All Disciples", which challenges us all to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
At the 8:30am traditional service, Communion will be observed and we will sing the spiritual "Let Us Break Bread Together on Our Knees". The organ music at 8:30am will include an arrangement by Alice Jordan of "Let Us Break Bread" and a brief closing voluntary based on the ancient Spanish Communion hymn "Pange lingua".
At the 11am traditional service (http://www.christgreensboro.org/traditionalworship) , the additional hymn "Come, Ye Thankful People, Come" reflects the joy of harvest. Both voluntaries are compositions of the French composer Louis Vierne: a quiet meditation from his third organ symphony is the opening voluntary, and at the close his brief but exuberantly joyful "Carillon" will be played.
Again, Communion will only be served at the 8:30am traditional service, and the 11:15am Spark service.
