Sunday, November 9, is the twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost. Rev. Louis Timberlake will preach the sermon, Be Ready, Be Fruitful, based on the scripture Matthew 25:1–13.
In deference to the upcoming national holiday of Veteran’s day, all Veterans will be recognized briefly in all services on this Sunday.
In addition to our Sunday events listed below, we also have our Bible Club, Sunday yoga classes, Financial Peace University, Flute Choir rehearsal, Choristers, Youth Choir, and Centering Prayer. Please check with your ministry leaders if you have any questions about these events.
Worship Through Music
As we read in this week’s Gospel lesson (Matthew 25:1-13) of our need to be always watchful and always ready for Christ’s return, we will sing hymns at our 8:30am traditional service which emphasize Christ’s ultimate reign (“Jesus Shall Reign”), his compelling love for us which leads us to serve others in his name (“Jesus, Thine All-Victorious Love”) and our mandate to glorify the name of Christ faithfully in our lives (“Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”). The New Covenant Choir will sing “Contemplative spiritual”, which is a medley of the spiritual “Somebody’s Knocking at Your Door” and the gospel song “Who at My Door Is Standing”, arranged by Donald Moore. The organ offertory by Robert Powell is based on the opening hymn; the closing voluntary is “Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word” set by German Baroque composer Dieterich Buxtehude. *
At our 11am traditional service, in addition to the same three congregational hymns which will be sung in the earlier service (“Jesus Shall Reign”, "Jesus, Thine All-Victorious Love” and “Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus”), the Choristers Choir of children in 4th through 6th grades will sing “I Am the Light” by Terry Taylor. In recognition of the need to be ready for Christ’s coming at all times the Chancel Choir will sing the spiritual “Keep Your Lamps” as arranged by André Thomas. Both organ voluntaries will be chorale settings by the 17th-century North German Heinrich Scheidemann: “Es ist gewißlich an der Zeit” and “In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr”.
