Christmas Eve Eve Service at Christ United Methodist Church Offers a Fun Alternative for Those Who Travel for the Holidays

Following the success of its first Christmas Eve Eve service in 2014, Christ Church once again will hold the family-friendly service on December 23

Greensboro, NC—For many young couples and families, Christmas Eve is a day spent traveling to spend the holiday with their family. Still, the opportunity to celebrate Christmas at home is an important way to mark the holiday. To reach those who will not be in Greensboro on the night of Christmas Eve, Christ Church launched its Christmas Eve Eve service in 2014. Held on December 23, the family-friendly service was successful, with 325 people attending to celebrate the holiday.

This year, Christ United Methodist Church will once again hold a modern Christmas Eve Eve service on December 23 at 7:15pm. “We had a ton of fun last year, and are so excited about the second year of the service,” said Louis Timberlake, associate pastor at Christ United Methodist Church. “It’s informal, upbeat, and a great option for anyone—especially families with kids.”

The worship service will feature fun twists on aspects of a traditional Christmas Eve service, including festive carols and a short sermon, plus a children’s story time around the (digital) fireplace. Glowsticks will replace traditional candlelight, and the atmosphere will be relaxed and welcoming. Cookies, hot chocolate, and coffee will be served before and after the service. Children are invited to wear their comfiest pajamas, and adults are encouraged to wear their favorite Christmas sweaters. As with last year, a “Selfie Station”—complete with props—will be set up so that families can capture a fun photo with which to remember the night.

In addition to the Christmas Eve Eve service, CUMC offers four Christmas Eve services. A child-led worship service is held at 4pm in the Sanctuary, while a modern service with communion is held at 6pm in the Fellowship Center. Christ Church continues to offer traditional Christmas Eve services as well: Two cathedral-style services featuring candlelight and communion will be held in the Sanctuary at 7:30pm and 11pm.

Christ United Methodist Church Launches Free Music Programs for Babies Through Three-Year-Olds

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 9/10/15

Christ United Methodist Church Launches Free Music Programs for Babies Through Three-Year-Olds
Beginning in October, Christ United Methodist ChurchTo Offer Babygarten™ and MUSICplay Classes

With the launch of its free Babygarten™ and MUSICplay programs this fall, Christ United Methodist Church will offer local parents and young children a budget-friendly opportunity to learn together through music. “Most parents do not realize that they can begin singing and chanting rhymes with infants to develop cognitive learning all while having ‘fun time’ with their baby,” says Lynn Gordon, Coordinator of Children’s Worship and Music at CUMC.

This marks the first time that Babygarten™ (for babies and toddlers aged three months to 24 months) will be offered in Greensboro. The program, which is for both the children and their caregivers, will include songs, rhymes and activities that help with language acquisition and pre-literacy skill, and a DVD for each caregiver/child pair reinforces at home what is learned in class with the teacher. Also intended to foster learning and and a love of music in young children (two- to three-year-olds), MUSICplay classes involve songs, rhymes, musical movement, and the use of instruments such as bells, claves and maracitos (miniature maracas), which come as part of a take-home instrument kit. Children will be accompanied to each class by a caregiver.

Lynn Gordon, who has been on staff at CUMC for more than a decade, will lead both the Babygarten™ and MUSICplay classes. She holds bachelor degrees in Music Education and Piano, and has trained in children’s music programs including Kindermusik and Music Matters. “What has been rewarding is to hear from some of the parents of children I had two decades ago, and how they’ve continued with music even into college,” Gordon says. “I know it works!”

The Babygarten™ and MUSICplay programs each run for four weeks, and classes are limited to 10 children each. The only cost associated with the classes are Babygarten™ DVD ($18) and MUSICplay instrument kit ($10). Interested parents can register online at www.christgreensboro.org/childrensworship. Four class sessions are available this fall:

  • Babygarten™ Babies (Three months–walking): Mondays, 10:15am–10:45am, October 12–November 2
  • Babygarten™ Toddlers (Walking–24 months): Mondays, 11am–11:30am, October 12–November 2
  • MUSICplay Two-Year-Olds: Tuesdays, 1:05pm–1:35pm, October 13–November 3
  • MUSICplay Three-Year-Olds: Thursdays, 1:05pm–1:35pm, October 15–November 5

“We are expecting a huge response to this free-tuition offering here at Christ Church,” says Gordon, “and are already planning more classes for 2016,” including Babygarten™ and MUSICplay sessions that will begin late January.

Christ United Methodist Church Embraces Both the Modern and Traditional to Celebrate Christmas Season

Greensboro’s Largest Methodist Congregation Chooses Multiple, Unique Worship Experiences Over “Blended” Services

Greensboro, NC: “Out with the old, in with the new,” has been the mantra of some historic mainline denominations seeking to stanch their loss of membership to large, non-denominational congregations. That’s not the case at Christ United Methodist Church on Holden Road, Greensboro’s largest United Methodist congregation.

“Well before I arrived here, Christ Church made the choice to be a “both/and” congregation, embracing both traditional and contemporary worship styles,” said Michael F. Bailey, the senior pastor since 2012. “Each Sunday morning, we have four services; two traditional services held in our sanctuary and two contemporary services held in our Fellowship Center. Because each service is unique, there is no pressure to dilute the service styles service by trying to blend them into one. Our Christmas Eve services will also follow this pattern, and unless otherwise designated, all offerings received on Christmas Eve will be sent to Greensboro Urban Ministries Emergency Assistance Fund, which helps people stay in their homes in dire economic times rather than become homeless.”

On Christmas Eve, Christ Church will two cathedral-style services in the sanctuary, a space noted as a popular music venue for classical music due to its Fisk organ and immaculate acoustics. Both the 7:30pm and the 11pm services feature carols, a candle lighting, and communion. The 7:30pm worship combines the Youth Choir with the church’s New Covenant choir and the 11pm service features the well-known, large Chancel Choir.

Family-friendly and contemporary services are also being held on Christmas Eve with a new service added on Tuesday, December 23rd. Louis Timberlake, a Christ Church associate pastor who graduated from Duke Divinity School in May, along with Matt Gravely, worship leader of the contemporary Sunday morning Spark service, to offer a Christmas Eve Eve service on December 23 at 7:15pm. The service will be child- and family-focused in every way: Children are invited to wear pajamas and adults are encouraged to wear their most outrageous Christmas sweaters, and coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies will be served. The 45-minute service will be informal, but will feature a twist on some elements of a traditional Christmas Eve service. For example, instead of candles for a candle light service, glow sticks will be given out, and there will be a “Selfie Station” with costumes to give families and friends an opportunity to go home with fun, goofy Christmas photos. Timberlake hopes this service will allow people who are traveling on Christmas Eve to have a worship service in Greensboro. “We have a lot of young families who travel to their parents’ homes and churches on Christmas Eve who would like to have a service with their children, where they regularly worship.” The church offers an additional children’s service at 4pm on Christmas Eve as well as a contemporary service at 6pm on Christmas Eve.
