Growing a Kingdom of Weeds

I love our education theme for this year, God’s Garden of Wonders. It reminds me of going to my grandparent’s house when I was a boy. We lived in Atlanta at the time and they did as wellin the same house for something like forty or fifty years. My grandmother had this incredible, sprawling garden behind the house. The size and diversity of the garden was extraordinary. To this day it is the most magnificent garden that I’ve seen in a residential setting. Unfortunately, after my grandfather passed away and she sold the house, developers turned the massive, beautiful garden into a collection of large homes with tiny lots. But, my earliest image of my grandmother is that of gardener, spending hours working hard to cultivate something beautiful. It’s a good image for God too, I think, working tirelessly to cultivate beauty in us and in the entirety of creation.
