Stephen Ministers' Stories

"Prayer and scripture are two spiritual tools used by Stephen Ministers which make our ministry different then other medical and/or counseling services. Yet, journeying with folks in crisis has challenged me to go beyond those two tools. I’ve used sermon texts, devotional books, music, guided meditations, and home communion kits to help these seekers cope and continue in relationship with God, the ultimate cure giver. Sharing these resources with others has helped me embrace life as a beloved of God." -Beth, Community Volunteer

"Stephen Ministry is a great thing to be involved in. I learned to be much more comfortable in a one-on-one relationship -- where I listen to the other person, get to know them, understand what they’re going through, and love then like Christ wants me to love them.

I encourage other men to get involved. The training is excellent, and being a Stephen Minister is going to help you more than anyone else." -Ron, Retired Real Estate Developer

"Being a Stephen Minister has been a life-changing experience. From the early training as a Stephen Minister through my years of being a Stephen Minister, my Christian faith has grown and developed in ways I never knew were possible. Witnessing God working to change other people’s lives has been a true blessing. When I see a care receiver who is so devastated by the tragic events they have experienced evolve from a withdrawn, heartbroken, woman unable to cope to a still vulnerable woman putting her faith in God above all else and on to become a woman of strength and healing offering comfort to others around her, I know that God transforms lives, not only the care receiver’s, but mine, too. How humbling it is to meet a care receiver and know there is nothing humanly possible I can do to change their situation and then to see God in action restoring healing and wholeness to them! The care receivers say I am a blessing, but truly, I have been blessed to be a Stephen Minister." -Judi, Sign Language Interpreter

"I have been a Care Receiver. During a really dark period in my life a dear friend who was instrumental in Christ Church "Stephen Ministry recommended I enter into relationship with a Stephen Minister. When I agreed to do so I did not realize how important that decision would become. Over the months spent with my Care Giver I realized how Christ centered the Stephen Ministry method is and how deep the extent of her training went.  I learned I could trust her with my most painful thoughts and that she would walk with me until we felt that God had brought healing sufficient for me to go it alone again.

After a time I was inspired to become a Stephen Minister so that I could pay it forward. Being a Stephen Minister is the most rewarding commitment I have in my life.  The training is useful in every area of life. Not only has it enabled me to walk with some folks who really needed someone to confidentially care and listen but it has made me a better family member, friend and co-worker." -Kathy, Care Receiver & Care Giver

"As a licensed professional counselor specializing in relationships with families, I appreciate the exceptional training Stephen Ministers receive -- it is professional, thorough, and includes a focus on relying on Christ and his leadership in a care receiver’s life. Stephen Ministry keeps in focus the Christ-centered relationship of accepting, caring, praying, encouraging and bearing one another’s burdens that are to characterize our relationships. It is a privilege to share in the life of another as a Stephen Minister." -Sherry, Counselor

"Because of my nursing background, I have always cared for people and wanted to help in any way I could. By becoming a Stephen Minister, I have received so much more than I could ever give. I have grown so much in my spiritual life and have gained a new perspective on what is priority, and how to make each minute of each day count. God has blessed me in this ministry and for that I am thankful." -Pat, Retired Nurse
