Traditional Worship
Weekly Traditional Services
Christ Church proudly offers the following two traditional services every Sunday. If you have questions related to our traditional services or would like to learn more, please contact one of our pastors or traditional music staff.
8:30 AM - Traditional and Informal (Sanctuary)
Our 8:30 service is traditional but in an informal and rather relaxed style: the congregation has a few minutes before the service to sing stanzas from “old favorite” hymns, which they request on the spot. This is followed by a very brief instrumental prelude leading into the body of the service. A choir, piano and organ furnish music leadership at this service, with occasional contributions by handbells or instrumentalists. This service is always completed well ahead of the Sunday School hour.
11:00 AM - Traditional Service (Sanctuary)
Our 11 AM service is more formal in worship style, during the winter months there is a formal processional with acolytes and crucifer, and a large adult choir and organ furnish most of the musical leadership, though handbell or instrumental ensembles also are frequently used. Major choral works are sometimes presented in this service as are children’s musicals, and a regular feature of this service is Sharing Faith with Children, which takes place for elementary children early in the service on the steps to the altar. Following the children's time, children may choose to follow the acolytes to the Chapel to continue to worship in a "Children's worship service." You can learn more about worship for children here. Although sacramental events can be celebrated at any of our services, the 11am service is frequently chosen for baptisms and confirmations because of the beauty of the Sanctuary and its spacious seating.
Special Traditional Services
Christmas Candlelight Service
Generally held at 5 PM on a Sunday afternoon late in Advent, this service is in the format of Nine Lessons and Carols and features both lay and ordained readers and ALL of the musical groups of the church, including a 45-minute musical prelude.
Christmas Eve
Several services are held to accommodate the large numbers of persons wishing to attend a Christmas Eve service. Two of the services, held in the evening and late at night, roughly mirror the 8:30 and 11 Sunday musical formats, while other services are designed to be more informal or especially child-friendly. It is best to check the church newsletter and website calendar during the month of December to ascertain the Christmas Eve schedule for a particular year.
Good Friday Tenebrae Service
One of the most dramatic and meaningful services of the year, this service on Good Friday evening features readings up to and including the Crucifixion of Christ and ends in total darkness, commemorating the darkness of the original Good Friday.
Easter Sunday
In addition to our regular services, both traditional and contemporary, there is usually a sunrise service outside on our property. Please check our church’s website calendar or newsletter for Easter Sunday details for a given year.
This Week's Music
(This page will be updated by Thursday of each week to reflect the music for the upcoming Sunday.)
We will have a special treat at 11 AM worship this Sunday, April 21: The High Point University Chamber Singers will will lead us in the musical portions of that service. This excellent group of singers, who have already performed recently or soon will perform at Carnegie Hall, the Vatican and other high-profile venues, will sing a wide range of musical styles as they prepare our hearts for worship and then lead us in our expressions of praise to God. The sermon by Rev. Michael Bailey will be based on John 10:22-30 and is entitled "In the Grip of Grace".
The 8:30 service of worship will be in the traditional format, with hymns reflecting the theme of God's grace as preached in the sermon. The New Covenant Choir will sing an arrangement of the well-known hymn "Amazing Grace".

Communion
In our traditional services Holy Communion is generally celebrated once per month, although exceptions are occasionally made because of calendar irregularities. In addition, Communion is celebrated at our more formal Christmas Eve services and on Maundy Thursday.
